On the 4th day of the 6th Tibetan month in 1970, Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche received a letter from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the exiled Tibetan government. On behalf of all Tibetans, Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche was requested to build a stupa (chorten) to help benefit Tibetan religious and political affairs and also to mitigate the effect of Dorje Shugden (Dolgyal). During that same year Kyabje Rinpoche visited Orissa to choose and finalize the site for the stupa on a vacant area of land on the far left of Camp No. 3, on the foot of an elephant shaped hill. Then Rinpoche delegated the building and completion of the stupa to Lama Sherab Rinpoche and Lama Dorje Namgyal Rinpoche. 100,000 (one lakh) miniature Dorjee Drolö statues (tsatsa) were made with the help of all the Dundul monks and the local Tibetan residents. The main Drolö statue was built at Kalimpong by a Bhutanese craftsman under the guidance and supervision of Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche. Tulku Tsephel went to Kalimpong to bring the main statue to Dundul Raptenling when it was completed the following year. Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche was unable to come with Tulku Tsephel, but he told Tulku that the Rabney (consecration ceremony) would be performed at Kalimpong, and that they should all feel as if Rinpoche was actually there with them at Dundul Raptenling. On the 15th day of the 4th month (Saka Dawa), the main statue Dorjee Drolö was put up inside the stupa at Dundul Raptenling, and all the lamas, tulkus  and lay persons waited for the Rabney to begin. Around  ten or eleven that morning, while the lamas  and tulkus were performing the consecration ceremony with white colored rice grains, different mixed colored rice grains called levang fell from the sky indicating Rinpoche’s blessing. Many people collected those colored grains for their blessing and good luck. There are many  stories of local residents benefiting from this stupa’s presence and blessing. As a site of refuge and blessing, there have been many instances where people who were ill offered whitewashing to the Dundul Stupa and were then miraculously cured.

Many great lamas including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Sakya Gonma Rinpoche, Kyabje Chatral Rinpoche, Tarthang Rinpoche and others have visited and offered prayers and blessings at the Dundul Chorten. His Holiness Jigdrel Yeshe Dorjee Rinpoche has written about the great benefits and blessings of the Dundul Stupa. Dungsey Thinley Norbu Rinpoche has also written about the benefits and blessings of the Dundul Stupa.

Each year, Dundul Raptenling Monastery performs “Drolö Tsogkhor” on the 4th day of the 6th Tibetan month (Chokhor Duchen) at the Dundul Stupa, commemorating the first day of the turning of the wheel of dharma by Shakyamuni Buddha. On the 15th day of the Vishaka month, individuals offer food and beverages to all devotees.
